Artifacts: Literature Review
Reflection:
The literature review was completed in the Educational Research course. The purpose of this artifact was to evaluate and synthesize previous completed research on an instructional technology related topic and to develop a summary of the findings. This was my first time ever conducting extensive research on a given topic and completing a literature review of my findings. I decided to conduct research on the effects of using iPads in the classroom. I decided on this topic because our school had just launched a Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) program and the results of this research could help my school in the implementation of the program. The completion of the artifact required extensive professional reading as ten articles were referenced. The literature review gave me an opportunity to research this topic, which is of great interest to me and, ultimately, has helped me with the implementation of iPads in my science classroom.
This artifact demonstrates mastery of standard 6.1 through my ability to conduct research on this topic in an effort to demonstrate continual growth in knowledge and skills of current and emerging technologies. In writing this literature review I spent a great amount of time looking for quality peer-reviewed journal articles. After going through a number of journal articles, I began to take notes on quotes and other facts to include in the literature review about iPads in the classroom. I am able to apply this new knowledge and skill into my own professional practice. I am going to share this knowledge with other teachers in my building. This will help us as we move forward in our BYOT program. I will also continue to complete research. This will help me in my own personal productivity and professional practice in improving the usage of iPads in the classroom.
By completing the literature review, I learned a lot about the research process. Before this course, I did know the difference between quantitative and qualitative research, but I was not aware of the difference between a journal article and a literature review. I also was not aware of the difference between scholarly peer-reviewed journal articles and regular internet articles while conducting research. Completing this artifact also reminded me of the importance of analyzing and understanding what the research is trying to accomplish and what it actually does accomplish. To improve the quality of the literature review, I would like to start out with a broader topic. Researching iPads in the classroom gave me really narrow results and made it hard at times to find good articles online.
The literature review impacts student learning because the artifact provided an opportunity for me to complete extensive research that I could, in turn, apply to my professional practice. I used my results in helping the BYOT program at my school. Faculty development was also impacted when I used my results and started sharing them with other teachers to see if their class had improvements. This impact could be assessed by evaluating the growth in the students with teachers who are using iPads in the classroom vs. student growth with teachers who are not.
