Artifacts: Assistive Technology Implementation Plan
Reflections:
The Assistive Technology (AT) Plan was implemented as an unstructured field experience. This field experience was completed in my ITEC 7445 class. In this experience I worked with a high schooler using different assistive technologies. This high schooler is a SPED student at his school. He has also been diagnosed with Autism. Since he was currently failing mathematics and ELA I helped him in with his math, reading, and writing skills. I had to plan, design, and choose the AT that was used during our tutoring time.
This artifact supports standard 3.4 because I had to facilitate the use of adaptive and assistive technologies to support individual student learning needs. I did this by creating lessons that had different AT in them. I then had to facilitate that lesson with the student. Some of the AT that I chose for my student is a Dragon to help dictate his words for typing, an Audible account to read his novels to him, headphones for him to use during all computer time for hearing anything read aloud and watching videos, and lastly a calculator for math work along with step by step methods for equations and other math facts. All of the AT that was implemented where there to support the individual learning needs of the student I was helping.
From this experience I learned a lot about AT in schools. I learned about some of the tools that I had at my school that I could use in this experience. I got to experience the wide amount of AT out there and what is considered AT. I also learned that I enjoy working with high schoolers. I teach middle school so this was a new and rewarding experience. If I could change anything about this experience it would be the time. 5 hours is just not enough time. I enjoyed working with the student and I truly believe that more time could have increased the success of the AT that was used in the tutoring.
The work that went into creating this artifact will positively impact student learning. As we recognize the needs of all students and incorporate adaptive and assistive technologies as required, we enable all of our students to reach their full potential in the classroom. Student achievement is increased, and there is overall school improvement. The impact on student learning will be assessed via completion of the various formative assessments, unit exams, end-of-course exams and the CRCT.
