1.2 Strategic Planning
Candidates facilitate the design, development, implementation, communication, and evaluation of technology-infused strategic plans. (PSC 1.2/ISTE 1b)
Artifacts: SWOT Analysis
Reflection:
The Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) Analysis was completed in my Instructional Technology and Leadership ITEC Course. I had to research, plan, and develop a SWOT analysis for my school. I had to look at my school’s strengths with technology integration and then find the weaknesses. I then had to determine some opportunities to improve technology at my school. To complete the analysis I had to finally look at what threatened or prohibited more technology integration at my school. I had to look at the SWOT and provide a needs assessment for each of the essential conditions for technology planning.
This artifact shows mastery of standard 1.2 because I facilitated the design, development, implementation, communication, and evaluation of technology-infused strategic plans. In this SWOT analysis I designed and developed a needs assessment for technology planning for my school. I then had to communicate through the document the strength, weaknesses, threats, and opportunities that were presented at my school for successful technology integration. In this analysis I evaluated SWOT for each of the essential conditions for technology planning and provided a summary about how my school could address the essential condition. This SWOT analysis could be shared with my school and used to help with implementation of this technology-infused strategic plan.
In creating this SWOT I learned about the hard work that goes into completing this analysis. This analysis took a lot of research and was very time consuming. Now that it is completed I can see the benefits of my hard work. I also learned how to objectively analyze technology needs using the SWOT template. This allowed me the opportunity to assess and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses at my school and determine ways to turn them into opportunities while acknowledging the threats. One thing that I would change in completing this SWOT is to conduct a teacher survey. Since I completed it through the summer I could not gather a large pool of teachers to survey. I gathered very few colleagues but not nearly enough to provide an in-depth analysis of SWOT technology needs assessment of my school. I believe that the more people I survey the more valuable data I could have received which could have enhanced the analysis.
By creating this artifact I directly impacted school improvement which should in turn impact student learning. By analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of my school, I was able to develop strategies that will continue to encourage improvements. Teachers then can use this knowledge and look at some of the opportunities and take advantage them. Also by having the threats listed teachers are aware of what they need to beware. This should incorporate more technology at the school which will in turn improve the school and increase student engagement. This increase in student engagement will then lead to an increase in student learning. This impact can be assessed by looking at the schools performance on standardized tests and performing another SWOT in the future. This can also be assessed by teacher feedback to see how they used the SWOT in their lesson planning.
