1.4 Diffusion of Innovations & Change
Candidates research, recommend, and implement strategies for initiating and sustaining technology innovations and for managing the change process in schools. (PSC 1.4/ISTE 1d)
Artifacts: Coaching Journal
Reflection:
The Coaching Journal was an assignment in the ITEC 7460, Professional Learning and Technology Innovation class. The purpose of the Coaching Journal was to summarize and document the ongoing progress and results of coaching a teacher on technology usage. We were instructed to put ourselves in the Technology Coach role and identify a teacher who could benefit from coaching sessions on the implementation of technology within instruction. I decided to coach a new teacher in classroom management. She had been struggling with this since the beginning of the year and I thought maybe by integrating a technology tool for classroom management this would help her. I chose to use Classroom Dojo. This is a classroom management app that allows you to do everything from any device in real time. It also allows the students and parents to access so that they can see their successes or failures in the classroom. The journal was a reflection and documentation of what occurred during these coaching sessions and any additional comments that needed to be made.
Standard 1.4 can be shown through the Coaching journal through my ability to research the best classroom management tool for my colleague, recommend the use of the tool that I chose (Classroom Dojo), and then it showed that I helped her initiate and sustain technology and managed to change her classroom management. Throughout the coaching process I was reevaluating and reflecting to ensure that the best possible choice was provided. Even during the coaching process I was still researching to see if I had chosen the best tool for my colleague. At the end we discussed how this could be sustained in her classroom and that she was going to continue to implement the use this tool for the remainder of the school year.
I learned that coaching others is not as easy as I had previously thought. I also learned that you have to practice patience and understanding. This allows you to really listen and hear what the teacher you are coaching needs. This allows for you to see what the needs of the teacher are and for you to meet those needs. If I could improve on this artifact I would have provided more options for my teacher. Sometimes what you think is best might not be for that particular person. Providing options allows choice for the teacher and maybe allows for something that fits the teacher more.
By completing this coaching journal I became more aware of what it takes to be a technology coach. This can impact the school improvement because the knowledge and skills that I have learned can be used in other avenues such as helping other teachers or giving presentations on various apps or new technologies. The impact on school improvement can be assessed by keeping data of the overall increase in teachers using technology in the school after I have given a presentation. This can also be assessed by looking at if teachers are continually using the technology that I have introduced to them after I coached them.
