Artifacts: Diversity Blog
Reflection:
This blog on diversity was written in my ITEC 7430 class. I had to read articles on the diversity in education. I then had to write a blog about my thoughts on the issue and how I would address the issue. In this blog I addressed diversity in schools and how resources like blogs can help teachers address and bring awareness to diversity both locally and globally.
This article shows mastery of standard 4.3 because I had to model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to support diverse student needs, enhance cultural understanding, and increase global awareness. In this blog I discussed how to meet the needs of diversity in the classroom. I discussed how teachers might have Special Education students, English language Learners (ELL), Low income students, and High income students all in the same class. These diverse needs must be met. There are digital tools and resources that can help with that. There are internet programs that help ELL students with reading, comprehension, and writing skills. There are modules that allow students to work at their own pace and personalize their work. This is also great because it allows students to take ownership of their work. I also discussed how using technology can enhance cultural understanding by creating online partnerships by using communication tools like Google Hangout and Skype. Creating this online partnership with other communities and schools will help students become more understanding of different cultures and it will also increase students’ global awareness.
Creating this blog brought to the forefront the importance of technology use in the classroom. It also allowed me to see how using technology can address the diversity of the modern day class. Students are different and they have a lot of different needs to be met. Using technology can help with the differentiation of the classroom. Technology offers more opportunities to connect, collaborate, and create with others than ever before. Utilizing these tools with our students to increase cultural understanding and global awareness is one of the most exciting possibilities to me. Therefore, to improve this artifact, I would like to focus on providing more opportunities for my students to move beyond the walls of our classroom. I would like to offer teachers information on different global programs such as ePals and Skype for education. These tools allow teachers to go beyond the walls of their classroom and connect globally.
The work that went into this artifact can impact teacher development and student learning. When teachers learn how to address the diversity in their class and they start to use these ideas then student learning will increase. In this accomplishment the students will more likely become productive and caring citizens of this global community and economy because they will see the importance of helping all students through teacher diversity best practices. The impact of this learning will be assessed through classroom observations and student surveys.
