Artifacts: Online Teaching Portfolio
Reflections:
My Online Teaching Portfolio was completed in ITEC 7482. This is a portfolio of artifacts that demonstrates my mastery of course standards in online teaching and my reflection on my professional growth in facilitating online learning. The artifacts that I used to complete this portfolio were created by myself during my time in the courses for the Online Teaching Endorsement. This was the endorsement that I worked on while completing my Masters in Instructional Technology degree.
This artifact shows mastery of standard 3.3 because it shows were I had to develop, model, and facilitate the use of online and blended learning. I had to develop a unit lesson in an online or blended learning setting. I then had to model and facilitate the lesson with my students. I had to use a Learning management system (LMS) and lots of digital tools and learning networks to support and extend student learning to make my unit a success. The LMS I used was Haiku Learning and some of the digital tools and learning networks were Discussion Posts, YouTube, PHET Simulations, Google Docs, Google Slides, Google Forms, and USA Test Prep. By creating this portfolio I had to make reflections on ways to expand opportunities and choices for professional learning for teachers and administrators.
From this artifact I learned all the work that goes into creating an online classroom. I had to create my LMS and implement the lessons. I had to determine course policies, technological requirements, and assess the digital content to be delivered. While this experience certainly prepared me to be a more effective facilitator of online and blended learning experiences, it was a challenging task. I found it difficult to teach in a brick mortar classroom setting and try to maintain the balance of an online or blended classroom. However, through the experience, I acquired strategies and skills to help me feel more comfortable in going totally online. I feel that by developing this online portfolio it helped me to see how I have become an effective communicator and facilitator of learning, especially in the online environment. After completing this experience I would approach teaching in an online platform differently. I was pressed for time and did not properly get my student properly familiar with the program before implementation. This caused a lot of questions later in the online unit which ended up taking more time.
The work that went into creating this artifact positively impacts faculty development and student learning. As a faculty member myself, I believe my knowledge and skill gained in the area of online and blended learning development will equip me to successfully do more in the future and expand my opportunities and help faculty implement lessons that are online. With more teachers using online lessons then students can learn at their own pace and in a way that they love. This should increase student engagement and thus impact student learning. This can be assessed by pre-and post-test in for online lessons that are implemented. The post test can be used to determine student growth. The growth can then be compared to pre- and post-test for lessons that aren’t online. This comparison will show the impact of an online classroom.
