Artifacts: Internet Safety Blog
Reflection:
This Internet Safety blog post was created to explore the safe, healthy and ethical use of technology. This blog was written in my ITEC 7430 class. I had to read articles on internet safety in schools. I then had to write a blog about my thoughts on the issue and how I would address the issue. In the blog I included what is internet safety, what are some strategies for teachers to use to practice internet safety, and how I address internet safety in my class.
This artifact shows mastery of standard 4.2 because through this blog I model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies. In this article I address how I model internet safety practices in the class. One way that I practice internet safety is by sending home letters and permission slips at the beginning of the school year about internet safety and internet publishing. Another way I model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies is by preselecting the websites that my students use. The blog also brings up issues like filters, legalities, and teachers discussing with their students internet safety.
From this artifact I have learned about some of the legal things that teachers have to consider with internet safety, such as copyright and student names. I think that this is important information for teachers to know because we are constantly posting things to our website and we do not want to break any laws we just don’t know about. I think learning about internet safety helps the teachers know what they need to in order to address internet safety in their classrooms. If there is one change that I would make in this blog it would be to discuss a little bit more about copyright and how it is a part of internet safety. Upon learning about copyright laws I find that they are tricky and every teacher needs a copy of the copyright laws for education.
The work that went into this artifact can impact faculty development and student learning. By discussing internet safety with teachers and modeling appropriate uses, they are can become more aware of the legal issues surrounding digital information. Then the teachers can teach the students some safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies. The impact of this can be assessed through classroom observations and conversations between students, teachers, and administrators.
