2.3 Authentic Learning
Candidates model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to engage students in authentic learning experiences. (PSC 2.3/ISTE 2c)
Artifacts: Engaged Learning Project
Reflection:
The Engaged Learning Project was created for ITEC 7400, 21st Century Teaching and Learning. I had to create an engaged learning plan that would allow me to help my students use higher-order thinking skills by becoming extremely involved in the learning process. I developed a technology infused authentic learning experience where I had to use digital tools and resources to engage students while also addressing the diversity of all students. The lesson I created was titled “Let’s Make Music”. In this lesson students had to study music and sound waves to create a song of their own about sound energy. The lesson was student-centered and students had to conduct their own research to help them create their final project.
This artifact shows mastery of standard 2.3 because I had to create a lesson that demonstrated the use of various digital tools and resources to engage students. In this lesson some of the tools that students used were Google Slides, Google Docs, Prezi, and Screencast-o-matic. Students also used Audacity if they wanted to pre-record themselves and not perform live. This project also showed mastery by providing students with an authentic learning experience. Authenticity is high in this area because students are using something that they love, music, and they are able to explore more into it and create their own. In this project the student is the explorer and the teacher is the facilitator. This is shown by students completing the tasks on their own and answering questions in each task. Also when creating the final products students are in charge of the creation. I modeled to the students how to use the digital tools and I facilitated the lesson.
Through this artifact I learned that through music students really learn a lot. I gave a pre- and post-test and the students had some of the best academic growth I have seen all year. The songs stuck with them and the fact that I had check points and reviewed their lyrics was great. This was great because the lyrics were more content accurate. By having checkpoints I could get the students to focus in on what the standards wanted them to learn. One thing that I learned from this experience was that time can get away from you. The students got so into making the music that they needed more time. I will have to rethink some of the aspects of the project to ensure that we do not run out of time the next time I implement this lesson.
The work that went into creating this artifact strongly impacted student learning. Students participated in a truly authentic learning experience that had real-world applications. They were very involved in this learning experience and were able to put their own individual ideas into a group project. The impact of this artifact can be assessed by student feedback or surveys as well as watching the student presentations of their projects.
