5.3 Program Evaluation
Candidates design and implement program evaluations to determine the overall effectiveness of professional learning on deepening teacher content knowledge, improving teacher pedagogical skills and/or increasing student learning. (PSC 5.3/ISTE 4c)
Artifacts: GAPSS Part A
GAPSS Part B
Reflection:
The artifact that I selected to represent this standard was the GAPSS Review/Current Reality. This artifact was completed in my Professional Learning and Technology Innovation ITEC course. This assignment required me to examine the 17 Professional Learning Standards and determine how they are addressed at my school. I then provided evidence to support my reason for rating the standards the way I did as well as provide recommendations for my school for each standard. I also had to interview my principal to further discuss the alignment of professional learning to our school improvement goals.
This artifact shows mastery of standard 5.3 because I had to design and implement program evaluations to determine the overall effectiveness of professional learning on deepening teacher content knowledge, improving teacher pedagogical skills and/or increasing student learning. I had to design a current reality of professional learning at my school. I then had to implement program evaluations by completing a GAPSS report looking at the 17 Professional learning standards. I had to determine the overall effectiveness of professional learning on deepening teacher content knowledge, improving teacher pedagogical skills and/or increasing student learning. I did this by rating all the standards as either emerging, operational, fully operational, or not addressed. I then had to reflect on why I gave my school this status in that particular professional learning standard. These standards addressed how my school uses professional learning to deepen teacher content knowledge, improve teacher pedagogical skills, and increase student learning. To help me complete my rating on the standards I used the principal interview, the school improvement plan, and any other resources that were needed.
From completing this artifact I learned that designing and implementing program evaluations to determine the overall effectiveness of professional learning is hard to do. It takes a lot of practice. I struggled with some of the ratings and I become very involved in trying to rate them correctly. I wanted to see what I did right and wrong. However in completing this I began to understand the GAPSS process and could see how necessary this is for a school. To improve this artifact I would include surveys from teachers. I included the answers from the principal interview, but I believe that getting the teachers input could help in seeing how teachers view the professional learning and current reality of our school. These surveys would provide additional insights to the effectiveness of our program.
The work that went into this artifact impacted school improvement, faculty development, and student learning. By evaluating professional learning, we can determine if it is aligned with our school improvement goals and meeting the needs of teachers and students. The results of this program evaluation will be shared with administrators to help with the planning of future professional learning and school improvement goals. The impact of this artifact can be assessed by examining the professional learning offerings for the upcoming year and continued program evaluation of professional learning.
